Heat. Gaming. Cleaning. Travel. Buying. Heat. Cats. Cucumbers.

Tomatoes. Cats. Ceiling fans. Food. NPR. Gaming. Watering cans.

Neighbour cats. Baby Lizards. HEAT HEAT HEAT OH GOD HEAT. Spiders.

Last night there was an earwig in the glass of water by my bed.

That was gross.

Kitty Model

Just found out that my Mum had to take her to the vet yesterday and have her put to sleep. She was pretty old, so I'm guessing time just caught up to her. Gutted, but probably not as gutted as I would be if I was actually there.

Does anyone know what kind of grasshopper/cricket this is? I like to read up on bug behaviour on wikipedia and plan accordingly.

Also, HOO BOY, my eyes are expensive. Yay mild astigmatism. I asked for my prescription and will be buying my back up pair + sunglasses online.

I am halfway to having things under control again. Caught up with missed TV yesterday. The dishes are only mildly piled up. Plants did not die over the weekend. Almost used up all of the scrap yarn, and a blanket is growing. Found a black widow spider on the zucchini plant last night and smashed it to death with a plastic Hansen's apple juice bottle. I made pancakes this morning.

Still haven't caged the tomatoes and cucumber plants (they are WILD and growing fast), cleaned anything, dug up the potatoes, started layering soil into tyres for the next round of taters, ordered the bulk load of soap we need, vacuumed, cleaned the kitchen floor, found a sewing machine, made a grocery list, figured out what we need for canning (persimmons are growing! Pickles! Tomatoes!), sent a form back to the UK to register for overseas voting, sent a Vietnamese coffee filter to my friend in Canada, plus a legion of other things.

I'm painting the yellow bathroom today. We picked out a dark blue/slate gray last October, but through fears of it being too dark, have yet to start. I'm just going to power on - we can always paint over a wall with a lighter colour if it's too much. I think it will be pretty sweet. We'll see.

Mom Ryde

Long weekend was an endurance test. Cake, shoes, Chinatown, little bottles of wine, epic Target shopping trip... at first it was pretty frustrating, but it evened out in the end. Much love to [Unknown LJ tag] as always, for making sure the cats didn't explode/kill each other for sustenance over the weekend. This year has been so busy, I do not know what we would do without the people that take care of them for us.

Next year = less busy.

This weekend I made zompus take me to an estate sale, and it was pretty awesome! The idea of rolling up to someone's house and going through their unwanted stuff is pretty intimidating/anxiety inducing, but I had a feeling the one that was listed was a dead-parent sale, and I was correct. Lots and lots of proper vintage things: glassware, a collection of owls (! I had to ignore this, I would have picked up 4 or 5 very easily), trashy books and jewellery and a random collection of clothes.

Inexplicably, there was also an N64, an original playstation and a Gamecube (games were terrible, and I already have all three back in the UK waiting to be shipped over), not to mention a drawer filled with Britney Spears memorabilia. Magazines, terrible cheap dolls that did not look like her at all, and even two floor rugs. I also ignored the WWF memorabilia.

Yarn Scraps

What I did manage to pick up: 3 bags of leftover yarn. Most of it is scrap, odds and ends, as someone had swept by and picked up the good stuff beforehand. But this was actually something I needed: I'm currently working on a scrap Afghan, lots of little squares, so this both recycles something that might have been thrown away while popping a bit of random colour into the blanket I'm making without having to buy any separate skeins. I'm not going to buy neon pink yarn, but I'll sure as hell use a couple of feet for the center of a granny square.

So useful.

Other things: a lovely green jewellery case. It originally contained some star stone thing, but stones are not useful. Pretty green boxes are. There was a 1946 Homemaker's Guide, pretty heavily used but the information inside is hilarious and useful.

Homemaker"s Cookbook

Also got some tiny crochet needles and some dressmaker spools. Figured they'd be useful.

Total cost: $25

Also went to Goodwill and managed to reap a 1960s World Atlas - this may or may not be destroyed for art purposes.

1960s World Atlas

The outer case is in pretty ragged condition but the inside is fine. I might feel bad about taking pages out for Art! On the Wall! But it says SOVIET UNION! instead of Russia, which is very nicely timed for the period our house was built. We'll see.

Man, that Babynoise is a piece of work. You should have seen what she did with a plastic spoon, some clingfilm and an open flame.

Still Alive

I suck at LJ! But I loved Hawaii.

Click through for the others I've uploaded so far. There are more coming! It's a seriously amazing place, great food, weird tourists, beautiful beautiful buildings. Chickens on the roadside (as mentioned by wedschilde) made me LOL to the extreme. Didn't get to see enough, despite seeing so much. Next time! Next time.

Having a weird on/off cold spell. I was sick last week, the weekend was fine, and then the congestion came back with a vengeance this morning. Very odd.

Lots of things keeping me occupied at the moment, but like Hawaii, I'm still not doing everything I want to do. NaNoWriMo is closer than it should be! I should start planning soon.
